WoW Invades MySpace

World of Warcraft has now jumped on the MySpace bandwagon, offering their very own page for you to add to your friends and increase that coveted friend count by one.

It’s worth checking out because on top of it all, you have the opportunity to enter a contest where the winner receives a special Blizzard edition iPod Nano – all you have to do is submit an in-game screenshot. There’s also a bunch of media goodies there that you can download and use to show off your allegiance and love of the game we’re all so completely hooked on. You know you’re curious, go check it out.

I stumbled across a new image hosting site thanks to the LM Forums. And the best part of all – no popup ads like imageshack has!! You can scale any image – including TGA files (WoW native screenshots) and host them for free. And once it catches on – no more of those super huge I don’t know how to scale my pictures posted in the forums! Ok I can dream can’t I?

I emailed the webmaster to see what other options they are going to include since it seems to be a fairly new site (ok well, I haven’t heard of it before at any rate) and found out they have quite a few ideas up their sleeves. Some of the planned features are the ability to create photo albums, different themed templates and you will also be able to upload a .zip file of images for quick hosting. How cool is that!

How to Report a Hack

Hortus recently posted this following tidbit in the official forums:

Hi Everyone.I would like to say that we take hacking of any kind on any server very seriously. We consider hacking of any kind on the test server to be disruptive to the test process and a reason to be removed.

There has been a miscommunication on our end on where to report players who you suspect are cheating and I would like to apologize for it.

The correct web site to report any form of cheating is:

http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=eHacks000

You’ll notice this is not a World of Warcraft specific site this web page it is for all Blizzard games. Please be sure to specify that your reports are for World of Warcraft, include the full server name (ie Test Realm PVE, Test Realm RPPVP), when the event occurred and the name of any characters involved.

Ask and ye shall receive. Amongst the cries for server performance upgrades, Eyonix, gave an update on the process that was started just before the summer kicked off, that of server hardware upgrades:

We wanted to provide a quick update on where we stood in terms of retrofitting existing realms with new hardware in preparation for the Burning Crusade expansion. Over the next four weeks, new equipment will be arriving on location at our World of Warcraft sites, and once everything is in place, we will be able to begin the extensive installation procedures. Ultimately, this new hardware will give our older realms nearly double their current processing power, which will significantly improve overall game performance.

It’s possible that during the upgrade process, extended maintenance periods may be necessary; however, we’ll make certain to provide those affected with ample notification.

In addition, prior to beginning the retrofitting process, we do plan to implement some short-term upgrades for the handful of realms that have been most severely impacted by stability and performance issues. Well provide further details on this procedure as soon as we can. Were 100% dedicated to ensuring World of Warcraft offers the most enjoyable experience possible for all players, and as always, we thank everyone for their continued support.

So I wonder if that finally means that Blackhand will be up-to-date and not limping along taped together with electrical tape and a prayer!! Boy I so hope so!

WoW Desktop Wallpapers

Personalize your desktop with official World of Warcraft wallpapers! Each wallpaper is available in five sizes. If you have trouble downloading .bmps, you probably need to decompress the file using a program that can handle ZIP files (like WinZip) and extract the BMP file into your Windows directory. Once this is complete, right-click in your desktop and select the Properties option and switch to the Background tab. Double-click on the BMP file and Apply the change.

PC Gaming, WoW and the Future

A very interesting article has emerged from Dave Spohn, of About.com fame…

Here’s a snippet:

If you’ve been following PC game sales for the last couple years, you’ve probably noticed that World of Warcraft hasn’t had a tremendous amount of competition since its release. Other games have still been successful, and have even outsold it for brief periods of time, but WoW has been selling as consistently as The Sims, which is pretty much unheard of for a massively multiplayer game.

The game has been such a hit, in fact, that some people feel it’s having a negative impact on the PC game industry as a whole. Their reasoning is that, instead of purchasing several games a year like they used to, many gamers are now too wrapped up in WoW to relinquish time and money to other titles, single-player or otherwise. It goes without saying that a successful product will always hurt its competitors, but could it be that WoW’s popularity will result in lower PC game sales overall?
