The 1.12 patch seemed to come as a surprise to many players, but even with the small patch size, servers were down extra long, as Blizzard extended maintenance time from 11AM PST to well into the afternoon. Some servers were still waiting to go live as late as 4PM PST or later, creating almost 24 hours of downtime for some players. Problems persisted on many servers, with general lagginess a common complaint, and Blizzard eventually instituted rolling restarts for realms on Wednesday.
